What is EPF?

The Employees' Provident Fund is a retirement savings account for employees of covered establishments. Each month you contribute 12% of your wages and your employer matches it (10% in some notified establishments). Of the employer's share, 8.33% of wages up to ₹15,000 goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme; the rest joins your EPF balance.

Interest is credited once a year on the monthly running balance, at the rate the Government notifies: 8.25% for 2024-25. The EPFO's board has recommended 8.25% for 2025-26, which had not been notified as of 12 September 2026. Since 29 June 2026 the rules have been those of the EPF Scheme, 2026 under the Code on Social Security, 2020.

How is EPF calculated?

Each month you and your employer each contribute 12% of wages (10% in notified establishments). Of the employer's share, 8.33% of wages up to the ₹15,000 wage ceiling goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme, and the rest to your EPF account. Interest follows the monthly running balance method of the EPF Scheme, 2026: the opening balance earns a full year's interest, each month's contribution earns interest from the month after it is credited to the end of the year, and the year's interest is credited on the last day of the year.

This is an estimate, not an official statement. Use it for planning only. For a binding figure, check with the department, bank or employer concerned.

EPF calculation example: ₹30,000 wages from age 30

Wages of ₹30,000 a month: you contribute ₹3,600 and your employer ₹3,600, of which ₹1,250 goes to the pension scheme. Starting from a nil balance at 30 and assuming a 5% pay rise every year at 8.25% interest, the balance at 58 is ₹1,30,30,968.

Of that, ₹25,22,992 is your own contributions, ₹21,03,160 your employer's share to EPF, and ₹84,04,817 interest. With no pay rise at all, the same account would reach ₹73,69,376.

The pay rise and a constant interest rate are assumptions for illustration; the EPF rate is declared year by year.
