Who is eligible for Magalir Urimai Thogai?
Women aged 21 or above who head a family on its family card — or the wife of the male head — in households with an annual income below ₹2.5 lakh, less than five acres of wetland or ten acres of dryland, and domestic electricity use below 3,600 units a year. 7 groups are excluded — they are listed below.
- You must be a woman aged 21 or above (for the first round, born before 15 September 2002).
- You must be the head of the family named on the family (ration) card, or the wife of the male head. Single women, widows and transgender persons who head a family also qualify.
- Only one beneficiary is allowed per family card.
- The family's annual income must be below ₹2.5 lakh.
- The family must own less than five acres of wetland or less than ten acres of dryland.
- The family's domestic electricity use must be below 3,600 units a year.
Who is not eligible for Magalir Urimai Thogai?
These exclusions are as important as the eligibility rules — an application that falls into any of the categories below will be rejected or the benefit later recovered.
- Families earning ₹2.5 lakh or more a year.
- Families with an income tax payer, or a member who files income tax returns on a family income above ₹2.5 lakh.
- Families with a professional tax payer earning ₹2.5 lakh or more.
- Families with a State or Central Government employee, or an employee of a public sector undertaking, bank, board, local body or co-operative institution, or their pensioners — except, from 2026-27, families of pensioners who served under the Special Time Scale.
- Families with an elected representative, other than a village panchayat ward member.
- Families owning a car, jeep, tractor or heavy vehicle for their own use — except, from 2026-27, a four-wheeler acquired through a government subsidy scheme.
- Owners of a business with an annual turnover above ₹50 lakh who pay GST.
